Can you tell us little bit about your company/collective/school?

Nostos Collectives is an autonomous group of emerging dance artists from various postgraduate training programs based in Toronto and Halifax. We are committed to pushing the physical and theatrical limits of contemporary dance, and provide a platform for original choreography and performance.

What are showing at DanceWeekend’19?

We will be showing a remount of “Head Over Heels”, choreographed by Emily Spearing and Gavin Law, originally premiered at show “EXCAVATIONS” in April 2018. This work explores and deconstructs conventional concepts of love while juxtaposing alternative representations of relationships and intimacy.

Who are the performers/collaborators in this piece(s)?

Jake Ramos, Anastasia Wiebe, Jessica Lowe, Sonja Boretski, Tyler Angell, Krista Newey, Jessica Germano, Irena Ponizova, Eleanor van Veen, Katherine Semchuk

Can you talk about your creative process? What inspires you?

We were interested in how society portrays love and relationships through a heteronormative lens and wanted to disrupt the common stereotypes. We were influenced by books, poems, and experiences based on queerness, polyamory, and our virtual/social reality and through those inspirations, as a collective, we generated movement material through collaboration and task-based explorations. We were also fortunate enough to be able to collaborate with sound designer Steve Bowa on a section of our score, creating our own original music.

Please share your experience performing in a previous DanceWeekend and/or tell us what you are looking forward to at DanceWeekend’19?

As Nostos Collectives, this will be our first performance at DanceWeekend! However, many of our members have performed at previous DanceWeekends. We are looking forward to sharing our raw physicality and aesthetic with the Toronto arts community!

What is one surprising or interesting fact about your company/collective/school?

Nostos Collectives Toronto was actually created as Jessica Lowe’s (Co-Artistic Director/Co-Founder) senior project in her last year at York University!

Do you have any up-coming performances/events you would like to share?

Yes! We will be presenting “Hinterland”, a full-length double bill production co-presented through DanceWorks CoWorks, featuring choreography by Emily Spearing and Dora-Award winning guest choreographer Naishi Wang!

We will also be hosting several workshops throughout the spring for movers of all styles and levels – if you are interested in how we work, our unique aesthetic, and/or our creation process, follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more information! We’d love to see you there!
