CLEaR Forum

Choreographic Lab, Exploration and Research
May 13-18, 2018

Deadline to apply April 5, 2018

Presented by Mocean Dance in partnership with the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, CLEaR Forum – Choreographic Lab, Exploration and Research Forum – is a residency-based choreographic research lab that takes place in rural Nova Scotia. The program provides two choreographers with a skilled support team, studio space for the duration of the week, a forum for dialogue and exchange, 1 to 3 skilled dancers to work with, and a small stipend.

CLEaR Forum is intended as a collective artist residency focused on exchange and community suitable for emerging to mid-career Canadian-based dance artists. The lab will provide choreographers the opportunity to question and progress their art making in an intimate, yet rigorous and engaging forum to work within.  With an aim to contribute to the growth of all participating artists, both choreographers and dancers participate in the morning programming and evening discussions. Through facilitated dialogue, led by the mentor team, discussions will be held to address the day’s work, support arising questions, and consider the diversity of art-making practices.

The Lab will take place in the picturesque setting of the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, in Canning NS.

  • About Guest Creative Facilitator -  Lin Snelling

She toured the world extensively as a performer with Carbone 14, created choreographies, and worked with many improvisation ensembles. As an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta she is presently teaching dance, experiential anatomy and composition and is Coordinator of the MFA in Theatre Practice program.  Her recent dance collaborations are a durational dance performance installation called anything goes: GWG Dance in 17 parts with dance artist Gerry Morita and Versing with musician/composers Michael Reinhart, Jeremi Roy, David Ryshpan and lighting designer Yan Lee Chan. Performing Book with visual artist Shelagh Keeley was performed at MoMA (New York), the Power Plant (Toronto) and Vancouver Art Gallery (2014-15). She works often with choreographer Tedi Tafel and was part of Every Day, Life World and the Calendar Project in Montreal. • A word from Lin:
I started teaching around the same time that I began performing, and developed pedagogy in dance and improvisation skills to keep my interest in the performing arts current.  Through the lens of dance, I am asked to slow down, have faith, work with, be discerning, trust, play, listen, struggle, be physical and walk into a place where body is the locus for imagination. As I collaborate with artists in the fields of performance, visual, musical and written medias I dance and choreograph to constantly research the whole body’s ability to transform and communicate physical understanding across many borders and through all language. I look forward and am honoured to work with all the artists at the CLEaR Forum.
